The Geeks’ Guide to Onion Rings: A Sonic the Hedgehog Inspired Guide

Inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog and his love of gold rings, The Geeks have put together The Geeks' Guide to Onion Rings! 2geekswhoeat.com #Sonic #SonicTheHedgehog #OnionRings #PartyIdeas #SideDishes #appetizersOne of the most anticipated movies this winter is Sonic the Hedgehog. For a variety of reasons, Sonic the Hedgehog is on everyone’s radar. We thought it would be fun to create a cool guide about onion rings inspired by the film. Not only that, but we are giving away VIP screening passes to see the film early!

“Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.”

The reason for choosing onion rings should be pretty obvious. In the video game, Sonic collects gold rings, which when translated into food terms is onion rings! Much like we did with our French Fry Guide, we decided it would be fun to do something similar for onion rings. Mainly there are 3 ways to go about this: type of onion ring, seasonings, and sauces. Below we are going to go through some of our favorite ways to accomplish each type.

Onion Ring Types

There are a few ways to prepare onion rings. We prefer our onion rings beer battered. However, that is not the only way, others include:

Seasoning

As with french fries, seasoning is the easiest and least messy way to modify your onion rings. It isn’t something that people think about when it comes to onion rings. Some options we really enjoy are:

  • Buffalo Seasoning
  • Parmesan Cheese and Garlic
  • Taco Seasoning
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Cajun Seasoning

Unlike fries, we wouldn’t recommend tossing your onion rings in sauce. In our opinion they don’t hold up as well and get very mushy. Instead, we recommend dipping them. Here are some sauces that we enjoy:

  • Frank’s Red Hot Sauce (even better if you double dip them with Ranch)
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Ketchup
  • Fancy Ranch (Salsa Ranch, Avocado Ranch, etc)
  • Chipotle Aioli

Did you know that there were so many delicious ways to eat onion rings? We are giving away 5 Family Four-Packs of VIP Advanced Screening Passes to an advanced showing of Sonic the Hedgehog!
