Ichabod’s Devilish Deviled Eggs: A Recipe Inspired by The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The Geeks have created a new recipe for Ichabod's Devilish Deviled Eggs, inspired by Walt Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. 2geekswhoeat.comHappy October! We promised we’d try to post more here, and we’re excited to be back! What’s even more exciting is that this recipe has been on our to-do list for a long time! Before we get to that, though, we have some other news! Sarah is co-hosting a brand new podcast, Geek Eats, with our long-time friend and colleague, Mr. Daps! The Geek Eats podcast will cover topics that we love: food and fandom! So what does that have to do with this recipe? Well, in each episode, Mr. Daps and Sarah will either create or review recipes that align with the fandom they are discussing. In the newest episode, it’s the Disney adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. So let’s get started!

In Walt Disney’s adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, “Washington Irving’s tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman is brought to life, narrated by Bing Crosby.”

Our recipe for the episode was one that we’ve had written in a notebook for a long time. It was inspired by the scene where Ichabod is eating at the Van Tassels’ party while listening to Brom Bones sing about the Headless Horseman. We see Ichabod peel and put a reddish spicy seasoning on a hard-boiled egg. Unbeknownst to him, the shaker lid has come undone and dumps this spicy seasoning onto his egg. The heat causes his eyes to water, and in the most cartoonish way, we learn that it was quite hot. We decided that there was a better way to recreate this: deviled eggs! After some research, we learned that paprika wouldn’t have been in the region at that time, but cayenne would have. It is also unlikely that a Dutch settlement would have even used cayenne, so we figured the animators may have just taken some creative liberties. Therefore, we took our own liberties as well. We used a mix of smoked paprika and cayenne to season both the filling and tops of our deviled eggs. The result was nice and smoky, but not too hot. This is also a recipe where we say, “measure with your heart.” If you want them with more heat, add more cayenne. Want less? Omit it altogether. The smoked paprika adds great flavor on its own.

We hope you enjoy trying out our recipe for Ichabod’s Devilish Deviled Eggs! We have lots of other Disney recipes if you’re interested. As I mentioned above, be sure to check out and follow Geek Eats! You won’t want to miss what we have in store for y’all!
