Like a good horror movie franchise, we’re never really dead, just sleeping for a while. All it takes is for inspiration to hit, and we’re back! After seeing The Toxic Avenger this past weekend, we knew we needed to “show the f*ck up” and get back in the kitchen! If you’ve seen the film, you know why we just had to create our own take on Gooze’s grilled cheese!
In The Toxic Avenger, “when a downtrodden janitor, Winston Gooze, is exposed to a catastrophic toxic accident, he’s transformed into a new kind of hero: The Toxic Avenger. Now, Toxie must rise from outcast to savior, taking on ruthless corporate overlords and corrupt forces who threaten his son, his friends, and his community. In a world where greed runs rampant… justice is best served radioactive.”
The grilled cheese scene is a cute moment post-credits, and we knew we had to create something. Fortunately, the social team for The Toxic Avenger shared a base recipe over on Instagram. However, we didn’t want to just create a standard grilled cheese. We made it a little goopier and added pesto for a bit of green. Our recipe may have a couple more steps, but we promise it’s worth it! Also, pro-tip: use American cheese from the deli, sliced a little thick, for the best results.
We hope you enjoy our oozy Goozey take on a grilled cheese sandwich. We can’t promise when we’ll be back, but we’ll always be around when you need us most! If you’re curious about how the film was, you can head over to Sarah’s site for her review! The Toxic Avenger is in theaters now! Go see it while you can!
The Geeks rise from the dead with a new grilled cheese recipe inspired by Macon Blair's remake of The Toxic Avenger.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons Mayonnaise (we recommend Best Foods/Hellman's)
- 2 tablespoons Pesto
- 4 slices White Bread (we used Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Hearty White since the slices were thicker)
- 4 slices American Cheese (we opted to have deli slices cut since they were thicker and better quality than standard singles)
- Butter
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine mayo and pesto. Set aside.
- Butter the outside of your slices of bread.
- Spread mayo on the inside of your slices of bread.
- Place 2 slices of cheese on the side with the mayo mixture.
- Cook on a non-stick pan (do not butter the pan) until both sides are golden brown.
- Serve with a glass of milk.
Notes
You can sprinkle shredded cheese on the outside as you cook for added crunch.
