It’s been a while since anything related to Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit has come out in the theaters. So imagine our excitement when we heard that Fox Searchlight was releasing a movie about J.R.R. Tolkien! Something you may not know is Matthew is a huge fan of Tolkien’s works! We thought this would be a great opportunity to create a new recipe and Hobbit Style Mushroom Toast was the result.
“Tolkien explores the formative years of the renowned author’s life as he finds friendship, courage and inspiration among a fellow group of writers and artists at school. Their brotherhood strengthens as they grow up and weather love and loss together, including Tolkien’s tumultuous courtship of his beloved Edith Bratt, until the outbreak of the First World War which threatens to tear their fellowship apart. All of these experiences would later inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-earth novels.”
Our recipe was pretty much 100% inspired by the following quote,
I am in fact a Hobbit (in all but size). I like gardens, trees and unmechanized farmlands; I smoke a pipe, and like good plain food (unrefrigerated), but detest French cooking; I like, and even dare to wear in these dull days, ornamental waistcoats. I am fond of mushrooms (out of a field); have a very simple sense of humour (which even my appreciative critics find tiresome); I go to bed late and get up late (when possible). I do not travel much.”
Tolkien’s love of mushrooms made them an obvious choice. What is great about this recipe is that not only are they good on toast, but can also be used on meat or as a side!

Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's hobbit-like love of mushrooms and the film Tolkien, The Geeks have come up with a delicious and easy recipe for Hobbit Style Mushroom Toast.
Ingredients
- 1 package Fresh Mixed Mushrooms
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1/8 cup Dry Sherry
- 1 tbsp Butter
- 1 sprig of Thyme
- 2 slices Whole Grain Toast
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a skillet.
- Saute mushrooms until are mostly soft.
- De-glaze the pan with the sherry.
- Add butter and thyme after the sherry is almost completely reduced.
- Remove thyme and serve on toast.
Notes
These mushrooms are also delicious on top of grilled chicken and steak or even as a side. Just omit the toast.
