- How long have you been a horror fan? What was the film that started it all?
I’d have to guess it started somewhere around 7 or 8 years old. First, it was more kid-geared horror, like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Are You Afraid of the Dark, even Poe stories. But right around ‘95/’96, a lot of horror started hitting HBO and pay-per-view, and I caught the insanity and imagination of things like Castle Freak and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. That was a big leap for a young mind and I was undeniably warped after. I was really fortunate to have a family who also, while not sharing my love of the genre, really had fun supporting it. My grandmother bought me Psycho; my father showed me Night of the Living Dead, The Shining, American Werewolf; my brother showed me Scream; my mother shook her head.
- What are thoughts on the current state of horror, what trends are you loving and which, if any, do you think are done?
Horror is in wonderful shape. When we think of waves of horror–whether it’s a trend, subgenre or quality–it’s mostly tied to wider releases. But horror is always bubbling, always being filmed, always being written. We often look back on periods thought to be low points and end up discovering obscurities or re-evaluating gems. Right now is probably one of our great eras, thanks to the spectrum of horror currently available, and major new talent emerging. We’re seeing absolutely stunning movies on all levels from wide releases like Us and The Invisible Man, to indies like Saint Maud and Daniel Isn’t Real, all the way to inventive micro films like One Cut of the Dead. It’s so neat.
On trends, I always try to keep myself open. A type of horror is only washed when it’s coming from a boring perspective. There’s life in any style or subgenre, it just takes a killer voice to breathe it into it.
- If you could tell horror fans one thing about how to support the horror movie industry as it stands what would it be?
Don’t pirate! And recommend the movies you love!
- What is your go-to movie snack?
Cherry coke and Reese’s Pieces, forever and ever.
- What are 3 movies currently available on Shudder do you feel every horror fan should watch?
New School: Terrified
A Classic: The Changeling
A Hidden Gem: Viy
